The BMW name stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH.

The 2002 is often credited as the model which put BMW on the map in the US.

In the mid-eighties, BMW launched its M (Motorsport) Division, which created high-performance versions of BMWs road cars. The very first was the original M5, based on the E28 designated 5 Series. The M Division then went on to make the legendary E30 M3, which is famous for its near-perfect driving dynamics.

BMW was created in 1917 by the Munich firm Rapp-Motorenwerke. The company was incorporated into Knorr-Bremse AG in 1920 before being found again as BMW AG in 1922. It was the successor of Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG, founded in 1916. 1916 is therefore considered BMW’s founding year.

The nickname “Beamer” comes from Great Britain – and originally served to distinguish it from a British manufacturer whose motorcycles bore the nickname “Beezer”.

The BMW Logo features inverse Bavarian colors since it was the company’s home state. The reason for this inverse order of blue and white in the BMW logo was the local trademark law at the time, which forbade the use of state coats of arms or other symbols of sovereignty on commercial logos.

The first key to the meaning of the BMW logo is its colors: white and blue are the colors of the State of Bavaria in Germany, home of BMW. A 1929 BMW ad depicts the BMW emblem, complete with the four colored quadrants, in a spinning airplane propeller. The interpretation that the BMW logo represents a propeller has endured ever since.
