BMW N63 V8 ENGINE

What are the most common issues with the BMW N63 V8 Engine?

BMW is tantamount to speed, prestige, and powerful engineering. The BMW N63 V8 engine is ahead of its time, cranking out 408 horsepower and 440 ft/lbs of torque. This engine is found in BMW 550i, X5, X6, 750i, and 650i models. While these vehicles deliver a great blend of athleticism and comfort, the BMW N63 engine still requires focused maintenance for optimal performance. There are several widespread issues with the BMW N63 V8 engine. These include oil consumption, fuel injector failure, timing chain failure, leaking valve stem seals, and fast battery drainage.

Oil Consumption

Built for responsiveness and power, turbos are placed in the middle of the “V” of the BMW N63 engine. This causes this area to be scorching hot, leading to the rapid burning of engine oil. At times, this can dry out the gaskets, leading to oil leaks. According to BMW, the engine is allowed to burn 1 quart of oil per 750 miles. Keeping a few quarts of oil in stock comes in handy. The BMW iDrive lets you know when to add another quart of oil. If your vehicle is consuming at a more rapid rate, it is best to bring your vehicle to our service center for further inspection.

Leaking Valve Stem Seals

Worn valve stem seals cause excessive oil consumption. This can be identified by tracking and measuring the amount of oil consumption. Worn valve stem seals are caused by aged rubber on the valve which harden and crack, losing its ability to seal the valve guide. The solution to this issue is to replace the valve stems with new ones.

Fuel Injector Failure

Symptoms of fuel injector failure include rough starts, poor acceleration, and engine misfires. If the check engine light is on, this could also be a sign of fuel injector failure.

Timing Chain Failure

A worn-out timing chain can lead to other engine-related problems. BMW N63 timing chain symptoms include the check engine light being on, rough running, and engine misfires. It is best to bring your vehicle to our service center to determine whether or not your timing chain requires replacement.

More Frequent Battery Replacement

The BMW N63 recharges the batteries while the car is coasting. Unfortunately, most BMW owners do not coast their vehicles. In addition, the electronic systems would stay on after the car was turned offer in order to cool the turbos in the center of the engine. The battery drains rather quickly due to both issues, requires more frequent battery replacements.

Maintenance Tips and Recommended Schedules

It is important that you bring your BMW in for regular maintenance. Key services include spark plug replacement, engine air filter replacement, cabin air micro filter replacement, and engine oil change. These guidelines are crucial for BMW vehicles that use the N63 engine, including BMW 550, X5, X6, 750 and 650 models.
